This CD consists of PDF files for Adobe Reader users. Adobe Reader is included on the CD. These files cover the Applications for the Dawes Rolls for all Five Civilized Tribes and contain far more genealogical material than is available in the Final Dawes Rolls. The Tribes covered include Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, Delaware, Osage, and Seminole.

snapshot of the CD

This CD contains over 250,000 names, with data showing how they are related to at least one other person in the Tribe. Use these files as you would a phone book. Look up your ancestors in the alphabetical files. Eliminate those with the ‘same name’ that are far too old, or far too young. Note the TRIBE and the CENSUS CARD number for these people. Open the Census Card section and find the page where the census card number should appear. Search for a matching CENSUS CARD number under the same TRIBE (the census card numbers were reused for each Tribe). This is the KEY to the Dawes Rolls…

Alphabetical Rolls

The Application Rolls for all “Five Civilized Tribes” have been combined under the letter of their last name. The reason for this is, many people have been told their ancestors were Cherokee, when in fact, the person that told them really didn't know. The Cherokees were the largest group at the time, and the most 'well known' among white society, so it was a 'safe bet'. Now you can research your family and find out for sure that your Jack Campbell - Cherokee, was really a Choctaw or Creek, or Chickasaw or Delaware (Osage), or Seminole.

There are also instructions on identifying your ancestor’s family, ordering copies of their Application Packets, and making your application to the Bureau of Indian Affairs for a Certified Degree of Indian Blood card. You may save these files to your hard drive for faster access. These files will require up to 150 meg of disk space, depending on which files you want to save. You will need to install the Adobe Reader program in order to view this CD.

Acceptable PROOF

The Bureau of Indian Affairs, under federal law, requires you to have a 'direct' ancestor listed on the Final Dawes Roll (issued a number in 1902) in order to qualify for a Certified Degree of Indian Blood Card. In order to prove your ancestral ties, you must submit "state certified originals" (no photo-copies) of birth and/or death certificates to tie you to the person listed on the Final Dawes Rolls. 'Direct' ancestor means a great grandparent, a grandparent, or a parent. Other relatives, such as uncles or aunts are not acceptable. In the event that your great grandfather didn't get registered, maybe one of his parents did... So keep looking.

May the spirits of your ancestors guide you in this quest.
